Yanga SC drop vital points as Folz records first draw

Dar es Salaam. Defending champions Young Africans (Yanga) were held to a goalless draw by Mbeya City in a Mainland Tanzania Premier League match at the Sokoine Stadium today, September 30, 2025

It was the first draw for Yanga’s new head coach, Romain Folz, since joining the club this season.

The result lifted Yanga into second place with four points, two behind leaders Singida Black Stars.

So far, Folz has overseen four competitive matches, including the Community Shield win over Simba (1-0), the CAF Champions League first-leg victory in Angola (3-0), the Mainland Premier League opener against Pamba Jiji (3-0), and the second-leg win over Wiliete (2-0).

Yanga dominated much of the match, creating several scoring chances, but their attacking duo of Andy Boyeli and Pacome Zouzoua failed to convert.

Mbeya City also threatened late in the game, with Vitalis Mayanga going one-on-one with Yanga goalkeeper Djigui Diarra, who produced a crucial save to keep the scores level.

Meanwhile, Elvis Rupia underlined his value for Singida Black Stars after scoring the decisive goal in a 1-0 victory over Mashujaa FC in a Mainland Premier League clash at the KMC Complex.

Rupia struck on the stroke of halftime, reacting quickest to a rebound after a well-delivered corner from Clatous Chama.

The goal arrived at a crucial moment and ultimately proved the difference, with both sides unable to find the net in a tightly contested second half.

Singida Black Stars dictated much of the tempo and carved out several clear opportunities but were guilty of wastefulness in front of goal.

Their failure to convert chances allowed Mashujaa to stay in the game, though the visitors lacked the creativity and cutting edge to mount a serious comeback.

The result gave Singida their second league win of the season, lifting them to six points from three matches.

Head coach Miguel Gamondi will be pleased with the points but is expected to demand sharper finishing from his forwards in upcoming fixtures if the team is to maintain momentum.

For Mashujaa, the defeat leaves them on four points from three outings, currently sitting sixth in the table.

While their work rate and defensive organization were evident, their lack of attacking threat proved costly against a more clinical opponent.

Elsewhere, Fountain Gate FC’s struggle continued, as they remain the only side yet to register a point or score a goal this season.

Having conceded six times in three matches, the league newcomers face an uphill battle to adapt to the demands of top-flight football.
