Dar es Salaam. The Mainland Tanzania Premier League title race is going down to the wire, with defending champions Young Africans (Yanga) and arch-rivals Simba SC each registering emphatic 5-0 victories in their respective matches played today on June 18, 2025.
Yanga maintained their slender lead at the top of the standings with 76 points from 28 matches after cruising past Tanzania Prisons at the Sokoine Stadium in Mbeya.
Meanwhile, Simba stayed hot on their heels with 75 points, thanks to a clinical demolition of relegated side KenGold FC at the Ali Hassan Mwinyi Stadium in Tabora Region.
Yanga's goals came from a dominant all-round performance. Mudathir Yahya opened the scoring, followed by strikes from Clatous Chama and Israel Mwenda, while Ivorian Pacome Zouzoua netted twice to complete the rout.
In Tabora, Simba SC were equally ruthless. Kibu Dennis bagged a brace, with Ellie Mpanzu, Leonel Ateba and Jean Charles Ahoua also finding the back of the net as the Msimbazi giants kept the pressure firmly on their rivals.
With two games remaining for both teams, the stage is set for a nail-biting conclusion to one of the most competitive seasons in recent memory.
The top two are separated by a single point, and both sides have shown no signs of faltering as the title race approaches its climax.
However, the situation is far less comfortable at the opposite end of the table.
Tanzania Prisons’ heavy loss to Yanga have plunged them deeper into relegation danger, currently sitting 13th with 30 points.
Their playoff fate seems increasingly likely, as Fountain Gate FC who are currently 14th also suffered a 1-0 defeat against Coastal Union at the Mkwakwani Stadium in Tanga.
Elsewhere, Azam FC recorded 5-0 win over Tabora United, moving up to 60 points and consolidating third place.
Singida Black Stars edged Dodoma Jiji 2-1, while Pamba FC narrowly defeated JKT Tanzania 1-0.
In other results, Mashujaa FC were held to a 1-1 draw by Kinondoni Municipal Council (KMC), and Namungo FC played out a goalless stalemate against Kagera Sugar.
