Unguja. The Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation (TPDC), in collaboration with the Zanzibar Petroleum Development Company (ZPDC), has begun preliminary natural gas exploration on Pemba island.
This initiative aims to enhance access to clean energy and reduce environmental degradation.
During an oil and gas technology exhibition held in North Unguja over the weekend, TPDC director general Faustin Kayombo said that the survey is part of broader efforts to harness natural resources for the benefit of local communities.
“TPDC and ZPDC are currently conducting early-stage surveys in Pemba. If the findings confirm the presence of gas reserves, the next step will be to develop the resource for public benefit,” he said.
Mr Kayombo added that Tanzania has discovered a total of 54.57 trillion cubic feet of natural gas, with 47.13 trillion cubic feet located offshore and 10 trillion cubic feet onshore.
This gas is currently utilized for power generation, cooking, industrial processes, and fuelling vehicles, with over 56 factories already connected to the supply.
“We urge the public to transition to natural gas and move away from using charcoal and firewood, which are harmful to the environment,” he emphasized.
TPDC communications officer Jacob Haule explained that the corporation participated in the exhibition to showcase its projects and the technologies used in the exploration, processing, and transportation of natural gas.
He noted that the gas currently powering Tanzania’s national grid originates from discoveries in Mtwara and Lindi, with Zanzibar being one of the beneficiaries of this supply.
“We have connected more than 1,600 households to natural gas. Throughout the exploration process, we always engage local communities to ensure environmental safety and sustainability,” he stated.
