Genesis Club swimmers steal show at Dar meet

Dar es Salaam. Genesis Club swimmers believe they have what it takes to win more titles after claiming top honours in the just concluded Rise Swimming Championship.

The Under-14 event, which took place at Shaaban Robert Secondary School’s swimming pool, featured up-and-coming swimmers from across the country.

It featured girls and boys who had not competed in the competitions organised Tanzania Swimming Association (TSA).

Genesis emerged overall champions after amassing 759 points in the mouth-watering event.

They were followed by Champion Rise Swimming Club with 753 points, while Kwanza International School finished third with 423 points.

Over 140 junior swimmers competed in the event that was supervised by coaches from Champion Rise Club, including former TSA technical director, Amina Mfaume.

Mfaume, who stepped down as TSA technical director a few months ago, is now a member of the association’s interim committee.

In an interview with The Citizen yesterday, Mfaume said they staged the event with a view to identifying anf grooming the country’s new generation of swimming stars.

She said organising age group competitions was one of the best ways to turn around Tanzania’s swimming fortunes.

According to her, there are many gifted youngsters out there who only need grooming and exposure to hit the limelight.

“Young swimmers who competed in the Rise Swimming Championship have the potential to represent the country in international competitions in the near future,” she said.
