TAA officer, Ugandan face six counts

What you need to know:

Even as the duo pleaded guilty, they were not bailed out because the DPP filed a certificate to object their bail for their own safety.

Dar es Salaam. Two people, including a security officer with the Tanzania Airports Authority (TAA), Mr Bernard Obeto, were yesterday charged at Kisutu Resident Magistrate’s Court with six counts of forgery and illegal possession of various documents.

Mr Obeto and his co-accused, Mr Mugabe Moses, who is Ugandan, appeared before Resident Magistrate Magreth Bankika and despite pleading not guilty were remanded until September 5 after the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) filed a certificate to object their bail on grounds of their safety and interest of the republic.

State Attorney Paul Kadushi alleged before the magistrate that on March 11, this year, in Dar es Salaam, the two forged work and resident permits bearing names of Peter Mugabe and Musa Setuba.

The accused allegedly forged the permits to show that the said work permit was issued by the Labour Commissioner, the fact which to their knowledge was false.

Prosecution alleged further that on August 10, 2016 at Tabata Kinyerezi in Ilala, Mr Obeto was found in possession of a rubber stamp closely resembling that of the Immigration Department with an impression reading “Immigration officer, allowed to stay for three months. Employment with or without pay is strictly prohibited while in Tanzania” an act which is prejudicial to the safety of the United Republic of Tanzania.

According to prosecution, the accused committed the offence contrary to Section 6(1) (f) of the National Security Act, Cap 47 R.E 2002.
