Sugarcane outgrower scheme kicks off

Morogoro. The government has introduced an outgrower scheme for sugarcane farmers in Morogoro.

The aim is to ensure the availability of raw materials for the planned sugar factory at Mkulazi.

The factory is expected to produce 200,000 tonnes of sugar annually. It is being undertaken by the National Social Security Fund (NSSF) and PPF Pensions Fund to support industrialisation.

It is expected to employ more than 100,000 people at the beginning, with the number, as well as production, set to increase as the time goes on. The minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office (Policy, Parliamentary Affairs, Labour, Employment, Youth and the Disabled), Ms Jenista Mhagama, was satisfied with the project development.

Industry, Trade and Investment minister Charles Mwijage called upon the investors to also consider investing in dairy farming.

“Since the project will also involve the cultivation of other crops such as rice, sunflower, maize and sorghum, it’s better to invest in dairy farming too as we would get a lot of crop residues which can be turned into animal feeds.’’

Directors general Godius Kahyarara of NSSF and William Erio of PPF assured the government, members and the schemes’ stakeholders that the security funds were implementing their projects with the highest level of integrity and transparency to bring positive results.

The Mkulazi investment will also involve the construction of another sugar factory at Mbiligili Prison in Morogoro to produce more than 250,000 tonnes of sugar annually.

The initiative is part of the implementation of the project.

For his part the Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment Mr. Charles Mwijage called upon the investors to also consider their project involves the investment in dairy sector.

“Since the project will also involve the cultivation of other crops, including rice, sunflower, maize and sorghum I thought it would be better if we can come up with the idea of investing in diary sector too as we would get a lot of crop residues which can be turned into animal feeds,’’ he added.

Eelier, speaking during the occasion, the project’s board chairman who is also the NSSF director general Prof Godius Kahyarara and the PPF director general Mr William Erio, assured the government, members and the schemes’ stakeholders that the projects are implemented with the highest level of integrity and transparency in order to bring positive results.

“We want to make sure that the projects are fully implemented without any scam in order to preserve the goodwill of the President and also to ensure that funds from our members do remain in safe hands, ‘’ said Prof Kahyarara

Mr Erio said the response is great, the matter which alerts them that the availability of raw materials to feed the factory is assured.
