Dodoma. The ruling CCM has won a total of 9,406 village and street seats against the Opposition’s 3,211 in last Sunday’s local government elections.

However, in spite of the feat, the party’s performance has dropped in general. In 2009, CCM won a total of 12,042 village and street seats in contrast to this year where the party has won only 9,406 seats.

The local government polls’ director in the Prime Minister’s Office-Regional Administration and Local Government (PMO-RALG), Mr Khalist Luanda, told reporters yesterday that the general results showed that CCM had recorded a much better performance than the opposition parties.

He said CCM won 7,290 seats in villages followed by Chadema, which clinched 1,248 seats. He added that CUF won 946 seats, UDP (4) while NLD and TLP managed to win two seats each.

With regard to the street seats, CCM led with 2,116 wins, Chadema (753), CUF (235), NCCR-Mageuzi (8) and TLP one seat. Others include ACT (9) while UMD and NRA won one each.

The CCM continued to record a good performance in areas, which are believed to be the party’s strongholds.

However, in some areas, which formerly were a ‘preserve’ of CCM, the opposition mounted challenges and managed to win several seats.

Some of these areas include Kondoa and Chemba districts. In last Sunday’s elections both CUF and Chadema managed to penetrate and win seats in such areas. The Opposition recorded a fairly good performance, increasing the number of village and street seats in the process.

In 2009, Chadema won only 413 village and street seats compared to the 1,248 of they clinched this year. CUF obtained 540 village and street seats in 2009 but this year it has increased the seats to 946. Generally, the opposition parties that form the Coalition of the Defenders of the People’s Constitution (Ukawa) garnered a total of 992 seats, but this year, they have increased the seats to 3,211.

Over 11 million Tanzanians were registered and declared eligible to vote in the just-ended local government elections.
