Shinyanga. Families of miners trapped underground at the Kikundi cha Wachapakazi mine have appealed to the government to intensify rescue efforts to ensure their loved ones are brought out alive.
Speaking at the scene on August 13, 2025, the relatives commended rescuers for working around the clock in shifts without rest but stressed that more manpower and expertise were needed.
Ms Catherine Koregeja, a resident of Kisesa in Mwanza, said her uncle was still trapped underground. She last spoke to him on Saturday as they discussed plans to attend a wedding.
“He did not turn up for the wedding and later his phone could not be reached. On Monday, we were informed that part of the mine where he works had collapsed,” she said.
Mr Joseph Buzuga, from Shinyanga Municipality, said two of his younger relatives were among those trapped. “Since we heard about the accident, we have been here. The rescue work is commendable, but we urge the government to increase efforts, bring in more specialists and doctors so our relatives can come out alive,” he said.
Ms Leticia Ndege, from Mwenge Ward, said: “The Bible tells us to give thanks in all circumstances. I learnt about this incident on Monday. My uncle is among those underground. The rescue efforts are good, but we pray to God they will come out safely.”
Shinyanga Regional Commissioner Mboni Mhita said the request for more medical support had been accepted and announced the deployment of doctors to the site.
“From now on, some doctors will be stationed here to provide immediate first aid before our relatives are taken to hospital,” she said.
