Dar es Salaam. Police have arrested four individuals suspected of being involved in a mob attack that led to the death of Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) driver Amani Simbayao. Simbayao passed away on Friday, December 6, 2024, at Muhimbili National Hospital (MNH).
Speaking to the media on Saturday, December 7, 2024, Dar es Salaam Special Zone Police Commander Jumanne Muliro confirmed that the suspects are currently under interrogation.
Simbayo was one of three TRA officials attacked by residents of Tegeta, near Ndevu, in Dar es Salaam, while attempting to seize a vehicle suspected of being smuggled into the country.
The news of his death was announced by the authority in a statement posted on its social media platforms on Friday night, December 6, 2024.
"The Board of Directors, Management, and Employees of the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) express their deep sorrow and offer condolences to the family, relatives, and friends of our staff member, Amani Kamguna Simbayao, who passed away on the afternoon of December 6, 2024, at Muhimbili National Hospital, where he was receiving treatment after the attack while performing his duties for the national interest in the Tegeta area near Ndevu," the statement read.
TRA further stated, "We expect all those responsible for this tragic incident to be brought to justice."
The attack on Simbayao and his two colleagues occurred on the night of December 5, 2024.
