Dodoma. The government plans to employ 1,000 ward executive officers (WEOs) with a view to reducing their shortage in the country, the parliament was told.

The statement was issued on Monday, September 10, in parliament by deputy minister of state in the President’s Office Regional Administration and Local Government (PO-RALG), Mr Joseph Kandege.

Mr Kandege was responding to a supplementary question from Tunduru South Member of Parliament (MP), Mr Daimu Mpakate, (CCM), who sought to know when the government was expecting to recruit the ward executive officers to curb the increasingly growing shortage.

In his response, Mr Kandege said the WEOs were important in stimulating development, noting that the government decided to recruit the officers.

"We have secured a permit to recruit 1,000 WEOs, the number we believe will help reduce the existing shortage,” he said.

Deputy minister said recruitment process will be fast-tracked because the country was in a huge demand of the officers.

Regarding allowances to local government chairmen, he said councils will set aside 20 per cent of total revenue collected to pay them.
