Arusha. The Chairperson of the Tanzania Commission for Human Rights and Good Governance Tom Bahame Nyanduga will be among notable lawyers from the region honoured during the East African Law Society (EALS) annual general meeting which kicks off in Zanzibar.
Others will be the immediate past President of the premier bar association in East Africa James Aggrey Mwamu and Justice Solomy Balungi Bossa, the only female President of the Bar to date currently a Judge at African Court on Human and People’s Rights based in Arusha.
Mr. Nyanduga, an accomplished lawyer, had made an indelible mark in the legal profession in the country over the years and at different times served as both the President of the Tanganyika Law Society (TLS) and EALS President as well.
EALS spokesperson Daniel Birungi said in a communication to The Citizen that over 400 lawyers have confirmed to participate in the conference which will be the 20th since the lawyers body based here was formed in the late 1990s. The society has an observer status with the East African Community (EAC).
Invited guests are expected from the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and the Economic Community for West African States (Ecowas). The meeting has been organized in conjunction with the Zanzibar Law Society and will take place at the Sea Cliff Hotel.
“The Legal Profession as a vehicle for trade and investment in East Africa”, will be the theme, the official explained.
He added that the conference will seek to explore the ways in which the legal profession can contribute to the betterment of the trade and investment climate in East Africa in addition to providing a platform for networking and sharing of best practices between the legal profession and business practitioner
In addition to the deliberations at the event, the regional lawyers’ body is expected to pronounce itself on key trending issues in the region such as the political and security situation in the strife-torn Burundi and the current political impasse arising out of the general elections in Zanzibar.
