Songwe. The government has expressed concern over the delay in the construction of the lounge at Songwe Airport despite the huge amount of funds poured into the project.

The expansion of the airport started in June last year and renovations are expected to be complete this year.

The Works, Transport and Communication Minister Prof Makame Mbarawa said the money spent so far on the construction is not justifiable.

He said he would carry out investigations so that he could satisfy himself with regard to the actual amount spent and the procedures under which the contractor was hired.

The minister said this at the offices of the Regional Commissioner during his tour of the region.

He said the airport in general is well built but the lounge was still incomplete although the government dished out a lot of money for the works.

He said he was disappointed upon learning that the contractor was not at the site.

The airport manager, Mr Hamisi Amiri, said the minister had promised to make an official visit to the airport today.

He added that the minister expects to get the answers over the delay in finishing the lounge.

Blame so far has been put on the previous contractor, Kundasingh Company which inexplicably stopped construction works at the new airport.
