The recognition reflects not only technical excellence but also assures patients across Tanzania and beyond that their test results meet international standards, the hospital said in a statement.
Dar es Salaam. The Aga Khan Hospital, Dar es Salaam (AKH,D) has been ranked among the top 10 laboratories in Africa for immunoassay performance.
The ranking was done by the Randox International Quality Assessment Scheme (RIQAS), one of the world’s largest external quality assessment programmes, which covers more than 10,000 laboratories in 150 countries.
The recognition reflects not only technical excellence but also assures patients across Tanzania and beyond that their test results meet international standards, the hospital said in a statement.
Reliable diagnostic results, hospital officials said, form the foundation of safe, timely and effective care.
In addition to the RIQAS recognition, AKH,D has also received ISO 15189:2022 accreditation from the Southern African Development Community Accreditation Service (SADCAS) under the new standard and protocols.
The accreditation places greater emphasis on mitigating clinical risks and improving patient-centred outcomes.
“These achievements are not only a milestone for our hospital but also for the country,” said Chief Executive Officer of Aga Khan Health Service, Tanzania (AKHS,T), Mr Sisawo Konteh.
“They show that AKHS,T is not only leading the continent in laboratory standards, patient safety and innovation, but is also an international leader in the field. Our commitment is to ensure that every patient, whether here in Dar es Salaam or across East Africa, receives care rooted in excellence, trust and sustainability,” he added.
Presenting the award, Randox’s representative in Tanzania, Ms Regina Ngulwa, said external quality assessment was about accountability and continuous improvement.
“By consistently achieving top performance, Aga Khan Hospital, Dar es Salaam, continues to demonstrate its dedication to quality results and patient safety,” she said.
These are the qualities that inspire confidence locally and internationally,” she said.
Head of Pathology at AKH,D, Dr Caroline Ngimba, said the recognition was a testament to the commitment of the hospital’s laboratory team.
“Every accurate result represents a life guided towards the right clinical decision and treatment. This award reflects the hard work of our laboratory professionals and their dedication to serving patients with precision and compassion,” she said.
As the only Joint Commission International (JCI)-accredited hospital in Tanzania, AKH,D continues to raise the bar for excellence in diagnostics and healthcare delivery.
Officials said the hospital is positioning itself as an international centre of excellence, helping to reverse medical tourism and supporting the government’s ambition under President Samia Suluhu Hassan to make Tanzania a hub for medical tourism in Sub-Saharan Africa.
