Mwakinyo will tomorrow defend his intercontinental super welterweight belt of the World Boxing Federation against Jose Carlos Paz from Argentina
Dar es Salaam. The World Boxing Federation (WBF) says Tanzanian professional boxer Hassan Mwakinyo will fight Lasha Gurguliani of Georgia in the US for the world title if he successfully defends his intercontinental super welterweight title against Jose Carlos Paz of Argentina.
WBF President Howard Goldberg made the statement yesterday after his arrival at Julius Nyerere International Airport (JNIA) Terminal 3 in Dar es Salaam.
Their eagerly awaited fight, whose referee Edward Marshal has also arrived in the country, will take place tomorrow at Oysterbay’s Next Door Arena in Dar es Salaam
Goldberg said Gurguliani is the current world title holder following his technical knockout (TKO) win in the eighth round against Mexican pugilist Edgar Ortega on January 26, this year at Vere Basketball Palace, Tbilisi in Georgia.
According to Goldberg, Gurguliani has already been informed about the fight if Mwakinyo wins his fight tomorrow.
“Mwakinyo has to win in order to get the chance. So, it is up to him because I have known Paz as a a strong boxer and their fight tomorrow is unpredictable because both boxers are talented. So, I have come with a new belt to be won by either of the two,” said Goldberg.
Goldberg, who visits the country for the seventh time, said he is disappointed at the way professional boxing is handled in the country with many boxing commissions to the extent of frustrating promoters, boxers as well as international bodies. “I am familiar with professional boxing in the country, although I was disappointed several times at how the game was handled, and some promoters were not honest. I have to express my appreciation to Jackson Group Sports for showing professionalism in the game and making things happen in this fight,” he said.
Apart from the Mwakinyo-Paz fight, the day, dubbed Jackson Group Fight Night, will see the best of boxing by fighters from six countries.
Tanzanian Zulfa Yusufu Macho will fight Zimbabwean Alice Mbewe in a six-round flyweight bout and Hussein Itaba will fight DRC Congo’s Alex Kabangu in a 10-round.
