Dar es Salaam. The national U-17 football team (Serengeti Boys) technical bench will strengthen the squad before competing in the Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) finals to be held in Morocco.
Serengeti Boys qualified for the Afcon after finishing second in the just ended Council of East and Central Africa Football Association (Cecafa Cup) held in Rubavu, in Rwanda. The team lost 3-1 to Uganda in the final encounter.
The team’s head coach, Ababu Omary, said they have detected some technical errors made by their players during the competition, especially in the final match.
He said the players made blunders in the encounter against Uganda’s Cubs who dominated the game from the start.
“They pressured our players into failing to maintain their stamina that resulted in allowing them to score three goals in the second half.
Some Ugandan players, who are taller than ours, managed win all high balls. We conceded the first goal after failing to clear a high ball. They had the advantage of scoring as they missed various clear scoring chances. We are now trying to find a competent defender, who can manage to control high balls,” said Omary. He said they will strengthen midfield and striking force areas before the competition. “We have only one competent striker in our team. We need to get another striker, who will support him. Morocco’s event is expected to be more competitive because each team will fight for the World Cup qualifiers.
“Teams that book a place for the semi-finals will qualify for the world Cup,” he said. He said all the Serengeti Boys players are now on holiday before resuming training early next month.
