Dar es Salaam. Azam FC's Spanish trainers kick off their duties today in preparation for the 2016/17 Vodacom Premier League, which gets underway late August.

The Chamazi outfit changed its technical bench after the 2015/16 league season, replacing Stewart Hall’s team with Spaniards.

The head coach of the 2013/14 league champions is Zeben Hernandez who will be assisted by Yeray Romero.

The duo arrived in town on Saturday and plan a few international friendlies should the 2016 Cecafa Kagame Cup be shelved.

“The team will start serious training today following the arrival of our coaches. We are preparing for the new season. We wanted to defend our Kagame Cup title later this month, but it is highly unlikely that Cecafa will organise the tournament,” said Saad Kawemba, Azam’s chief executive officer.

Other Spanish trainers who touched down over the weekend include physical trainer Jonas Garcia and his assistant, Pablo Borges as well as goalkeepers’ coach Jose Garcia.

They will be assisted by local coaches Dennis Kitambi and Idd Abubakar.

Speaking at the Azam headquarters yesterday, Hernandez promised to change the Kagame Cup reigning champions into a formidable side when players master Spanish free flowing football style.

“We have an elaborate plan to change the way Azam play football. It’s our hope that when players get used to the new style, we will be a team to beat on the continent.

“We want to ensure that Azam perform well in both domestic league and Caf Confederation Cup,” said Hernandez.

Kawemba disclosed that plans were afoot for Azam to pitch a camp oversees, but fell short of naming the country where they team would go for preparations.

“We want to camp outside the country, but that will depend on whether the Kagame Cup will be there or not,” he said. Azam, who finished second last season, won the Kagame Cup after beating Gor Mahia of Kenya last year.
