Kigali. Mainland champions Azam FC had little mercy on Ethiopia’s Adamma City as they trounced them 4-1 to make it to the quarterfinals of the 2014 Cecafa Kagame Cup at the Nyamirambo Stadium yesterday.

Azam, gunning for their first Cecafa Cup title, scored their goals through team captain John Bocco, Didier Kavumbagu, Hamis Mcha and Kipre Tchetche, while Desaleny Debesh netted a consolation goal for the Ethiopia team.

The ice cream makers stamped their authority in the game right from the start and ought to have gone one up two minutes into the game when Mcha, with only Adamma’s goalkeeper to beat, shot wide.

Bocco broke the stalemate in the 30th minute with a sizzling shot from the edge of the penalty box. Ten minutes later, Addama equalised through striker Debesh.

On resumption, Azam never relaxed and regained their lead in the 55th minute through Kavumbagu, who connected home a cross by Erasto Nyoni with a diving header.

Three minutes after the hour mark, Azam survived a scare when defender Said Morad blocked Belete’s goal-bound shot with goalkeeper Mwadini Ally well beaten.

Mcha made it 3-1 for Azam in the 70th minute off a neat pass by Kavumbagu before Tchetche put things beyond doubt in the 74th minute.

Meanwhile, after his team’s two-all draw with APR of Rwanda in the ongoing Cecafa Kagame Cup, Gor Mahia head coach Bobby Williamson has termed the referee and linesman who officiated their game as a ‘disgrace’ to the game.

Gor were on the verge of registering their first win in the tournament but Barnabe Mubumbvi equalised in the dying minutes to deny them the win that could have increased their chances of booking a quarter final berth.

Speaking to the press after the game, Williamson faulted the officials, blaming them for the loss.

Disgusting

“The game was not a bad a game but the referee and the lines man were a disgrace, absolute disgrace.

“We get a free-kick then he ends the game. The linesman sees one of my players fouled off the ball and does nothing. It is disgusting,” he said.

His APR counterpart acknowledged a few referee mistakes but that said that he was only focusing on the match and not the officials.

Bottom

Gor are bottom of group B with a single point while APR top the group with seven points. Gor next face AS Ali Sabieh Djibouti Telecom today in their last group stage fixture with both sides having just pride to play for.

APR will play their final group game against KCCA of Uganda this afternoon but they could be without key central defender Emery Bayisenge, who suffered hamstring injury and was replaced by Elve Rugwiro.

Title-holder Vital’O of Burundi are also out of the competition following their 1-1 draw with El-Mereikh of Sudan – they both have four points but the Sudanese side have a better goal difference.
