Dar es Salaam. Kagera Sugar’s U-20 youth football team has won the National Bank of Commerce (NBC) title against Dodoma Jiji FC following their 3-2 victory at the Azam Complex.

The final match was decided by a penalty shootout following a goalless draw after 120 minutes.

This is the first time Kagera Sugar U-20 has won the title in their history. The title was previously dominated by Mtibwa Sugar’s U-20 team from Morogoro.

NBC Bank’s Director of Treasury and Financial Markets, Peter Nalitolela, and Tanzania Football Federation (TFF) President, Wallace Karia, handed over the trophy to Kagera Sugar captain, Shomari Mponzi, in a brief ceremony held after the match.

Speaking at the ceremony, Nalitolela said their bank is committed to the development of the game in the country, which is why they have decided to sponsor the youth league featuring U-20 teams from the top flight league.

“We have sponsored three leagues: the Mainland Tanzania Premiership, the Championship division (formerly known as the first division), and the U-20 teams. This shows how committed we are to sports development in the country,” said Nalitolela.

Earlier this month, the bank awarded the Championship League trophy to Kengold from the Mbeya region, and last Saturday, they handed a trophy to Young Africans (Yanga) who won their 30th title in history. “Fundamentally, we congratulate Kagera Sugar’s U-20 for this achievement.

They join the other two champions who have successfully won these NBC trophies in the 2023/2024 season. NBC's support for this youth league is driven by our commitment to having a high-quality and competitive premier league due to the talent generated in our country,” he said.

According to Nalitolela, the bank recognizes the importance of talent development and believes that through this competition, various talented players have been scouted for the betterment of senior clubs as well as national teams.

Additionally, Nalitolela said that the completion of the three leagues provides an opportunity for the bank to continue its other sports programs, including its kids' talent clinic, the NBC Football Clinic, as well as preparations for the upcoming NBC Dodoma Marathon, which aims to raise funds for the treatment and screening of cervical cancer in women, as well as supporting midwifery education in the country.

For his part, TFF President Karia commended the bank for its significant support in sports development in the country.
