Dar es Salaam. The Prime Minister of the United Republic of Tanzania, Mwigulu Nchemba, has commended the National Committee for the Preparation of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2027, expressing satisfaction with the progress, pace and direction of preparations for the tournament to be co-hosted by Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda next year.
Speaking on Tuesday, February 10, 2026, during a meeting with the committee at the Prime Minister’s sub-office in Magogoni, Dar es Salaam, Nchemba said the milestones achieved so far reflect the government’s strong commitment to ensuring Tanzania becomes a successful host of the continental showpiece.
“The progress achieved so far demonstrates the government’s firm determination to ensure Tanzania hosts AFCON 2027 to the highest standards,” the Prime Minister said.
He emphasized the importance of broad participation across all sectors, calling on ministers, permanent secretaries and other officials to actively involve stakeholders within their respective areas of responsibility.
“We want to see every sector fully engaged so that these preparations deliver positive results during the tournament,” he said.
The Prime Minister also urged committee members to ensure each person effectively oversees their assigned duties so that all preparatory activities are completed on time and in line with required standards.
The AFCON 2027 finals are scheduled to take place from June 19 to July 14 next year, featuring 24 national teams that will be drawn into six groups of four teams each.
This edition will be the first AFCON tournament to be jointly hosted by three countries and the first to be staged in the CECAFA region in more than five decades, since Ethiopia hosted the competition in 1976.
The tournament will also mark the 70th anniversary of the Africa Cup of Nations and will be the last edition to be held every two years, following CAF’s decision to switch to a four-year cycle from 2028.
Senegal are the defending champions, having lifted the title on January 18, 2026, after edging Morocco 1–0 in the final.
