Yanga, Masaka and Crissa Shine at NSC Sports awards

Dar es Salaam. Tanzania’s up and coming swimmer Crissa Dillip expressed her excitement after winning the People’s Choice Award at the 2024 National Sports Council (NSC) Awards, held on Sunday night at the Super Dome in Masaki, Dar es Salaam.
Crissa, who represents the Taliss-IST Swimming Club and HPT, said the award has inspired her to continue striving for excellence in the sport.
The teenage swimmer rose to prominence and managed to win silver and bronze medals at the Dubai Open Championship in the fiercely contested 50m backstroke event.
Her achievement not only marks a major milestone in her growing career but also brings international recognition to Tanzanian swimming.
“I’m very happy to win this award. It is the People’s Choice, and I thank everyone who voted for me. Their support motivates me to work harder and become more recognized in the sport,” said Crissa.

In the male category, the People’s Choice Award was won by cricket player Laksh Bakrania. The awards night also saw Tanzanian football giants Young Africans (Yanga SC) crowned Best Club of the Year, edging out basketball side Dar City.
Yanga claimed both the Mainland Tanzania Premier League and the CRDB Federation Cup titles last season. The award for Best Male National Team went to the national amateur boxing team, while the Best Female National Team honor was awarded to the women’s national football team, Twiga Stars.
Brighton & Hove Albion WFC forward Aisha Masaka was named Best Female Sports Personality of the Year. In the male category, professional boxer Fadhil Majiha received the top honor. Veteran athlete Theresia Dismas was presented with a special recognition award for her outstanding contributions to athletics in Tanzania.
Other winners included Neema Hamis (netball), who won Best School Sports Personality of the Year in the female category, and Baraka Sanjigwa (athletics), who claimed the male equivalent.
The Best Young Sports Personality of the Year award went to Namnyaki Isaya (basketball) in the female category, while Sabri Kondo (football) won in the male category.
In sports journalism, Fatma Chikawe of Azam Media successfully defended her title as Best Female Sports Journalist, while Juma Mohamed of Channel Ten was named Best Male Sports Journalist.
Additional honours included Best Female Referee, awarded to Tatu Malogo (football), Best Male Referee to Shabani Mohamed (basketball), and Best Male Coach to Samwel Kapungu.
