Zimbabwe sink Tanzania in Africa T20 encounter

Dar es Salaam. Tanzania lost to hosts, Zimbabwe by nine points in the ICC Africa Women’s World Twenty20 Qualifier taking place in Harare.

Reports from Harare said that the local ladies batted first to score 67/8 in all 20 allotted overs with Fatuma Kibasu scoring 23 runs.

Zimbabwe came in to catch up with the score and managed to score 68/1 in 8.1 overs with M Mupachikwa scoring 32 not out .

Uganda had also a date against Kenya whereby they won by 53 runs.. Uganda scored 114/4 in 20 overs before Kenya ended in 61 all out in 19.3 overs. The defeat of the Tanzanian ladies comes after they earlier whipped Uganda with a 4-run win in a closely fought encounter.

The twenty over cricket championship has attracted four nations namely; Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda and the hosts Zimbabwe. The tournament wind up today in the Zimbabwean capital.

According to reports from Harare, Tanzania won the toss against Uganda during the second day of the event and decided to bat first in their allotted 20 overs.

They posted a score of 84 runs for the loss of 3 wickets.

Kibasu scored an unbeaten 40 runs off 56 balls to emerge the top scorer. The best bowler for Uganda was R Musamali who took 1 wicket for 11 runs in 4 overs.

That was the only Tanzania’s first win of the tournament that also aims at promoting women’s cricket, apart from being part of World Cup qualifiers.

Tanzania has been lauded for fielding the youngest team in the tournament.

The young Tanzanians were set in to bat and posted a total of 40 runs for 9 wickets. Top scorer for the Tanzanians was Latifa Salumu who scored 12 runs from 12 balls. The chief destroyer in the bowling department was M Ngoche who took 3 wickets for 13 runs thus giving Kenya their second victory in this event.

The 20-over tournament is contested on a round-robin basis and each team meet each other twice, with the team that finishes with the most points winning the regional event and proceeding to the global qualification tournament for the 2018 ICC Women’s World Twenty20 in the West Indies.

April 25 was rest day and the event was expected to continue yesterday with Tanzania again meeting Uganda, while Zimbabwe will battle it out against Kenya in the morning fixture, before local ladies face Kenya and Zimbabwe facing Uganda in the afternoon final day.
