17 journalists from Mwanachi Communications LTD nominated for excellence awards

Seventeen journalists from Mwananchi Communications Limited (MCL) have been nominated for EJAT-2018 awards.

Dar e Salaam. Seventeen journalists from Mwananchi Communications Limited (MCL) have been nominated for the 'Excellence in Journalism Awards Tanzania-2018 scheduled to be held on June 29, 2019.

The nominees include Malika Nginilla, Shija Felician, Anthony Mayunga, Jackline Masinde, Haika Kimaro, Joyce Joliga, Tumaini Msowoya, Harieth Makweta, Bernard James, Alfred Zacharia, Phinias Bashaya, Elias Msuya, Eliya Solomon, Janet Joseph, Michel Matemanga, Erick Boniphace and Halili Letea.

The number is out of 81 nominees who were announced yesterday by the EJAT organizing committee Chairperson Mr Kajubi Mukajanga at a press conference held in the city.

“We received a total of 644 submissions. After a thorough assessment by the judges, at least 81 nominees were selected as favourites to win the awards,” said Mr Mukajanga.

 He added: “The number of nominees for EJAT-2018 has increased. At least 54 were nominated in 2017.”

During the previous EJAT-2017, at least 7 out of 12 journalists affiliated with MCL emerged winners of different categories including the overall winner position awarded to Ms Florence Majani.

Announcing this year’s EJAT nominees, Mr Mukajanga who also serves as the Executive Secretary of Media Council of Tanzania (MCT), asserted that the nominated MCL journalists were among the 43 nominees from different regions under the category of print media.

Other nominated include journalists affiliated with IPP Media and Tanzania Standard Newspapers (TSN).

Furthermore, the Chairperson revealed that the number of female nominees has increased from 24 nominated in 2017 to 34.

Referring to this year’s EJAT main event, Mr Mukajanga further asserted that the event will be graced by Prof Chris Maina from the University of Dar es Salaam, to be held at Golden Tulip Hotel in the city.

During yesterday’s press conference, one of the judges who took part during the assessment and selection of the EJAT -2018 nominees, Mr Kiondo Mshana clarified that the majority of journalists who failed to go through were lacking journalism skills including a failure to balance a number of sources of information in their articles, to mention but a few.
