Mwanza. Some residents of Mwanza City are forced to walk long distances in search of water after the burst of a pipe in Mabatini area.
According to Mwanza Urban Water Supply and Sanitation (Mwauwasa) Managing Director Anthony Sanga, there was a problem at the main water supply pipe in Mabatini.
“There is a serious problem at the main pipe at Mabatini point, a pipeline which carries water from our treatment unit and storage reservoirs to streets,” he said.
According to him, Mwauwasa has informed its customers on the water woes through mobile phone text messages.
He added that Mwauwasa engineers and technicians were at the site to fix the problem.
A resident of Igoma Ward, Ms Susan Lucas, told The Citizen that wananchi in the area have been going without water services for six days now and that earlier Mwauwasa officials informed them that the problem would be fixed in hours.
She said Mwauwasa informed that there was a shortage of electric power to support the pumping of water and that the main pipe was also dilapidated.
Ms Mariam Anthony, a resident of Mahina Ward, said they were fetching water from a well.
She said that was not safe for them especially at a time when there is cholera.
“Some of us have to wake up as early as 4am to fetch water from the only borehole. Some have to walk long distances to fetch water from Lake Victoria,” she said.
A resident of Bukaga Village in Kishiri Ward, Mr Lucas Mbelele, said wananchi were sharing water with animals.
“We have no other option except to use same water that is used by animals,” he said.
