Dar es Salaam. A police officer stationed in the Dar es Salaam Special Police Zone was yesterday sentenced to life imprisonment after he was found guilty of defiling and sodomising a 13-year-old girl.
Ilala District Court also ordered PC Daniel, 24, to pay Sh2 million to the victim in compensation.
Senior Resident Magistrate Said Mkasiwa said he was satisfied that evidence produced by four prosecution witnesses were sufficient to ground conviction.
The police officer, who initially was stationed at Kilwa Road Police Station was found with a case to answer and was asked to defend himself against the charges.
The court found him guilty of the first charge of defilement and sentenced him to 30 years in jail and got a life sentence for sodomising the victim. “This court has gone through evidence adduced by prosecution and considered your defence. This court finds you guilty as charged and sentences you to life imprisonment,” the magistrate said.
PC Daniel committed the offence at Tabara Madukani in the city in November last year but escaped from his home only to be arrested in Tanga in February this year.
Before the sentence was passed, State Attorney Erick Shija asked the court to mete out severe punishment to the accused officer to deter other people from committing similar offences.
During mitigation, the advocate of the accused officer asked the court to reduce the punishment because the accused was the first offender and that he committed it when he was coming from booze and its source was drinking.
The accused faced two charges of defilement and sodomy.
In the first offence, the accused committed it on November 22, last year, in Tabata Maduka Mawili, Ilala District, whereby Daniel defiled a 13-year-old girl. In the second offence Katika, on the same day the accused sodomised the same girl child contrary to nature.
