Yanga now need only three points to retain Premier League title

What you need to know:

  • If Yanga win their next match against Dodoma Jiji FC, they will collect 74 points that cannot be reached by any other team in the league.

Dar es Salaam. Young Africans (Yanga)’s 2-0 victory over Singida Big Stars yesterday placed them in the best position of retaining the NBC Premier League tittle for the second time in a row.

Both goals were scored by Stephane Aziz KI, who netted in the first in the 15th minute with a powerful shot just outside the danger zone, leaving Singida Big Stars goalkeeper Benedict Haule hapless.

The goal increased the match’s pace with Singida Big Stars searching for an equalizer while Yanga looking for another goal in a thrilling encounter held at the Liti Stadium in Singida.

However, it was Yanga again who celebrated for the second goal through Clement Mzize in the 21st minute after he was set clear by Jesus Moloko. Mzize scored from the close range after Singida Big Stars defenders Bienmes Carno and Serge Pascal Wawa had failed to mark him.

This is the second time for Singida Big Stars to lose a match at their home venue. The loss means the Singida based team have failed to take revenge on Yanga this season. In their first leg held on November 17 last year at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam Yanga won 4-1.

The first time Singida Big Stars lost at their nome venue was against Coastal Union on December 7 last year when they were beaten 2-1.

In yesterday’s encounter Singida Big Stars played well, but their strikers Meddie Kagere and Bruno Gomes failed to score before the half time.

The victory means Yanga now need only three points to retain the NBC Premier League title this season.

Currently, Yanga have collected 71 points from 27 matches while Simba, who recorded a 1-1 draw against Namungo FC on Wednesday, are second with 64 points from the same number of matches.

If Yanga win their next match against Dodoma Jiji FC, they will collect 74 points that cannot be reached by any other team in the league.

The defending champions are now shifting focus to the CAF Cup semifinal match against Marumo Gallants of South Africa on May 10 at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium.
