Arusha. Athletics Tanzania (AT) will soon embark on a fund-raising drive for the proposed high altitude training camp and construction of its permanent offices.

Already the 63-year-old association has requested a 1,000 acre land preferably in Mbeya, Iringa and Manyara regions for the purpose.

“We need to raise funds. We have discussed this with our local and foreign partners” said AT secretary general Wilhelm Gidabuday here yesterday

According to him,one of the fund raising activity will be organising a 1,300 kilometre charity walk from Kigoma to the National Stadium via Bagamoyo.

“We want to do it as soon as possible. I would be among those who will walk,” said the former athlete, who organised a similar expedition from Bagamoyo to Kigoma to promote athletics in his Hanang home district.

The proposed office for AT will be in Dar es Salaam while the training camp will be at any agreed region across Tanzania “depending on availability of land”, he said. The charity walk is expected to last 30 days.

Gidabuday said one of the earmarked sites for high altitude training camp is the former wheat estates of the defunct National Agricultural and Food Corporation (Nafco) at Bassotu uplands in Hanang.
