Cecafa names TZ refs for 2017 Challenge Cup

        Dar es Salaam. The Council of East and Central Africa Football Associations (Cecafa) has named Tanzanian referee Sasii Ally among eight officials who will handle the 2017 Challenge Cup matches.

Cecafa has also named eight assistant referees for the regional tournament, which kicks off on Sunday in Nairobi, Kenya. The assistant referees include Tanzania’s Lila Soud Idd, according to the Tanzania Football Federation (TFF) Media and Information officer, Alfred Lucas.

In an interview with The Citizen yesterday, Lucas said Ally and Idd will leave for Nairobi tomorrow ahead of the two-week championship.

Ally (29), who handled the Mainland Premier League match between the country’s soccer giants, Simba and Young Africans, on November 4 at the Uhuru Stadium, is among the best referees in the country.

He also handled well the Community Shield showdown between the two teams on August 23 at the National Stadium.

Also on the list of assistant referees for the Challenge Cup is Nassor Mfaume from Zanzibar.

Idd (30) is also among the most respected assistant referees in the country at the moment.

Other referees for the Cecafa Challenge Cup with countries they come from in bracket Re; George Gatogato (Burundi), Twagirumukiza Abdoul Karim (Rwanda), Peter Waweru (Kenya), Antony Ogwayo (Kenya), Alex Muhabi (Uganda) and Malong Ring Akech (South Sudan).

Assistant referees are Herve Kakunze (Burundi), Tigle Belachew (Ethiopia), Ndagijimana Theogene (Rwanda), Tony Kidiya (Kenya), Joshua Achila (Kenya), Dick Okello (Uganda) and Ronald Katenya (Uganda).

Meanwhile, Tanzania Mainland’s national soccer team, Kilimanjaro Stars, have embarked on residential training ahead of the tournament.

Kilimanjaro Stars are camping at Kunduchi minus from players from Azam FC who are expected to join their colleagues at camp today.

The team is scheduled to leave for Kenya on Thursday. They will undergo light training for three days before launching their Challenge Cup campaign against Libya on Sunday.
