Dar es Salaam. Defending champions Young Africans (Yanga) have reportedly finalised a deal to re-sign their former midfielder, Feisal “Fei Toto” Salum, on a three-year contract.
However, Azam FC, have current club, insist that no formal offer has been received. According to sources close to the Jangwani Street giants, Fei Toto has already agreed personal terms and committed to rejoining Yanga ahead of the 2024/25 Mainland Premier League season.
Azam FC management, however, maintains that the player remains under contract and that any interested club domestic or foreign must follow due process.
Fei Toto, who first rose to prominence at Zanzibar’s JKU SC, initially joined Yanga in 2018 before controversially moving to Azam FC in 2023.
His transfer sparked debate and confusion, particularly surrounding contractual and compensation issues between the two rival clubs. Speaking under anonymity, a Yanga insider confirmed:
“It’s true. We have signed a three-year deal with Fei Toto, for the upcoming league campaign. The financial package involved remains confidential.
The only step left is for Yanga to finalise talks with Azam FC, just as they did when Azam acquired him.”
According to the terms of Fei Toto’s current contract with Azam FC, any club intending to secure his services must activate a release clause worth USD 500,000 (Sh1.3 billion).
Azam FC’s Information Manager, Thabit “Zaka Zakazi” Zacharia, however, told The Citizen that they have not received any official approach from Yanga or any other club.
“As it stands, Fei Toto is our player. He is under contract with Azam FC, and no club has reached out with a formal offer,” he said.
Apart from Yanga, regional heavyweights Simba SC and South African giants Kaizer Chiefs are also said to have shown interest in the talented midfielder.
Nonetheless, it appears that Yanga’s history with Fei Toto, as well as their ambitious plans for the upcoming season, may have influenced the player’s decision.
Fei Toto is reportedly being lined up to replace Burkinabe midfielder Stephane Aziz Ki, who recently completed a move to Wydad Athletic Club of Morocco. Aziz Ki was a key figure for Yanga last season, and his departure has left a creative void that the club is eager to fill.
During his spell at Azam FC, Fei Toto proved to be a crucial player. In the 2023/24 season, he finished second in the race for the Golden Boot with 19 goals — just two behind eventual winner Aziz Ki.
In the just-concluded season, he also topped the assist chart, registering 13 assists alongside four goals.
With pre-season preparations underway, all eyes will now be on whether Yanga can swiftly reach an agreement with Azam FC and officially welcome Fei Toto back to the club that helped establish his career.
