Dar es Salaam. Retired boxer Rashid Matumla has called on his son, Mohamed Matumla, to work harder if he wants to shine on the international stage. This comes two days after witnessing Matumla Jr edge a determined Chinese pugilist, Wang Xiu Hua on points on Friday. Matumla Jr outpointed the Chinese to win the World Boxing Federation (WBF) elimination super bantamweight title. The boxer, who is following his father’s footsteps recorded 98-92, 99-92 and 97-92 points from the judging trio.
Speaking yesterday, the legendary boxer, who also trains his son, said Matumla Jr needs to go an extra mile for he still lacks the killer punch.
“I am happy that he won the fight, which was tight enough, but I think he still lacks the killer punch. He should have killed off that fight in early rounds.
“I am his trainer and I took note of that, so I will take him through an arduous training to attain that skill. You can’t knock someone out if you play like that,” said the boxer, who hung up his gloves a few years ago. Friday’s victory saw Matumla Jr book a place to feature in one of the undercards before the Manny Pacquiao-Floyd Mayweather Jr fight on May 2 in Las Vegas.
“I still believe that Mohamed has what it takes to achieve more than he managed, but that will depend on discipline besides improving the skills he lacks,” he said. “I want him to register knockouts in his next fights because he has that ability, but we still have time to fix his weak areas and I am optimistic he will be lethal come May.”
