Dar es Salaam. This year’s charity Goat Race will go down as one the most exciting races the country has ever hosted.

The well-attended races took place at The Green grounds, Oysterbay in Dar es Salaam on Saturday.

The objective of the event was to raise funds for the needy, according the organisers.

Six different races were staged during the event, each involving six goats.

The opening race was sponsored by Coca-Cola Tanzania, which dished out Sh450,000 as the prize for the winner. And Goat number seven named Lord Baldrick huffed to the finishing line first.

Goat number seven, named Kanjenje Speed, hit the podium to claim the Sh300,000, courtesy of the Southern Sun’s Fillies Floric race.

The first three opening races were dominated by goat number seven as paparazzo goat rushed to touch the finish rope in the Charity First Classic to collect a Sh150,000 cash prize.

Top of the pile in terms of prize package was the fourth race, which was sponsored by Tanzania Breweries Limited (TBL) under the Kiliflow brand.

This time it was goat number five named John Paul Goather, which claimed the day’s biggest jackpot of Sh600,000.

Penultimate race was supported by Toyota Tanzania, Toyota Hilux 2017 Derby and was won by goat number eight christened the Dalai. Sh 300,000 went to the winning goat.

Stanbic True Blues was the day’s final race staged late in the evening with goat number 9 named The Last Hurrar winning the Sh300,000 donated by the bankers.

In between the races, raffles were conducted and several entrants won. Some cheques were also donated to charitable organisations, including The Kidz Care and Janet Manoni’s Friends of Children with Cancer (FOCC).

Kids had their fun at the Reader rabbits special reserved park with simple made locomotive dominating the show.

Dress show for kids as well as for elders was also staged in between the races.

The balloon and planet boy and Maasai girl stole the show with strong impression.

While entry fee soured the prize package for winning goats came down. The brewers who used to part with Sh2,000,000 barely five years ago settled for Sh600,000 as prize package for winner of their Kiliflow race.

Still it was the highest as Sh150,000 was the lowest. Five years ago Sh600,000 was the lowest prize package.

Entry fees that used to be between three and five thousand shillings have scaled to Sh10,000 and Sh20,000 per kid and adult respectively.

Fortunately, all the first three opening races winners donated back their prize money to the charity fund pool.

The event projected to generate over Sh 120 million, slightly the same as the previous year’s revenue collection.

In the past 18 years, the annual event has generated over Sh1.1 billion, which was channeled to various charitable organisations across the country.
