Rweyemamu wins first MCL-LBGC golf award

Mwananchi Communications Limited (MCL) managing director Francis Nanai (left) looks on as the winner of the MCL-LBGC golf tournament Mohammed Rweyemamu hands over the trophy to his wife at the TPDF golf course on Friday night. Rweyemamu dedicated the trophy to his wife who was celebrating her birthday on the same day.

Dar es Salaam. Mohammed Rweyemamu emerged top in the Lugalo Breakfast Golf Community (LBGC) tournament Friday after grossing 76 at the Tanzania People’s Defence Force Lugalo Golf Club.

He was followed by Foti Gwebe who grossed 91, while former Tanzania Golf Union (TGU) chairman Joseph Tango settled for the third slot.

Tango scored 79 gross against Balozi Sai Kaphale who recorded 86. Victory proved to be an uphill climb for Rweyemamu amid formidable opposition from Gwebe, who did his best in the tournament sponsored by Mwananchi Communications Limited (MCL), publishers of The Citizen, Mwananchi and Mwanaspoti.

Rweyemamu, who was awarded a trophy, admitted he faced a challenging task from Gwebe.

“I am very happy to win the tournament; I am really excited because I won it as we go towards the end of the year,” he said.

“My wife is celebrating her birthday, so it was not an easy decision to compete in the event on this day. I had to choose -- but I thank God for doubling the celebration. It’s this win and the birthday.”

In the ladies category, prominent national team golfer Angel Eaton once again proved her worth after beating Hawa Wanyeche.

Eaton won by countback after the two golfers each grossed 72. Speaking after winning the event, Easton said she was very happy to win the close contest against Wanyeche.

“It was a tough contest as you can see each of us grossed 72. I am excited to become the winner in the invitees’ ladies category,” said Eaton.

In Lugalo’s younger golfers group, Francis Ekeng won the group with 71 strokes to beat his close challenger, Cloudy Mtavanga with 72.

In Laki Si Pesa group, John H won with 70 and was followed by Balozi Kalino who recorded 75 gross, while in the Wazee Poa group, Boniface Nyiti beat Joseph Tairo after scoring 77. Pricilla Karobia topped in the MMS group against Maryan who scored 95. Karobia scored 86.

At the prize giving ceremony, MCL managing director Francis Nanai promised to continue giving support to the game due to its potential.

“We are very happy to support the game; we have received positive feedback, and I have been inspired enough to continue with our support,” said Nanai.
