The National Arts Council (Basata) has banned controversial Bongo Flava artiste Zuwena Mohamed alias Shilole for one year over morality issues.

A video that went viral on social networks a few months ago shows Shilole performing in Belgium in revealing clothes that irked national morality watchdog.

Speaking to the Citizen Digital on Friday, Basata Executive Secretary   Godfrey Mngereza said the artiste was warned on previous occasions over her dress codes that cross morally acceptable lines, set bad example since she is a celebrity and taint the image of the country abroad.

“We earlier issued warnings to the artiste over her behavior of appearing half naked during her performances. She apologetically promised us that such acts would not repeat in future but she has done it again, he said and added:

“Tanzanians and the world saw what happened in Belgium a few months ago. It was very a shameful event that did not only demean her as an artiste, it put to shame Tanzanian women and the country as a whole.”

He called upon artistes to recognise the position they hold in the country and that Basata will not hesitate to take strong measures to anyone celebrity or non-celebrity who fails to act according to the country’s accepted proper conduct.

When contacted for comment Shilole confirmed that she had indeed received a letter from Basata banning her artistic activities but added that she was in discussion with her lawyers on way forward which she said was to file a petition.

“My fans should be patient as these challenges are sorted out” she said.
