New hope in 5-year water project

Residents in Bugogwa and Sangabuye wards have urged the government to release funds for the Sh645 million water project.

Speaking during the laying of the foundation stone for the project Ilemela municipal mayor Renatus Mlunga said the district council has already received Sh85 million for the the project.

Mr Mlunga said the balance will be released in instalments to complete the five year project.

The funds will be to tap water from Lake Victoria to be distributed to residents in the two wards.

“Residents of Bugogwa and Sangabuye wards have gone for a very long time without easily accessing clean and safe water,” said Mr Mlunga.

Speaking to The Citizen shortly after the launch a resident, Ms Alphonsina Mnguye urged the government to ensure that the project is completed on time.

“Although we live close to the lake we do not accessed clean and safe water; we are glad that the government has finally remembered us,” said Ms Mnguye.

According to statistics obtained from the ministry of Water and Irrigation only 58 per cent of residents in the region access clean and safe water. As per the 2012 census Mwanza has a population of 2, 727,509
