Mbeya. Six out of eight people injured in the tragic road accident that claimed 28 lives on the night between June 7 and 8 have been transferred to Mbeya Regional Referral Hospital for further treatment, as families continue collecting the bodies of the deceased.

The accident, which involved three vehicles, occurred along the Iwambi downhill stretch and claimed the lives of 27 people at the scene. One more person later died while receiving treatment at Ifisi Designated Hospital in Mbalizi Township, raising the death toll to 28.

The acting medical officer-in-charge at Ifisi Hospital, Dr Morice Martin, confirmed that six of the injured had been referred to Mbeya Regional Hospital, while the condition of the remaining two patients was showing improvement.

“We do not yet have the exact number of bodies that have been collected, but the process is progressing smoothly. Some patients have been transferred for specialised care, and those still with us are stable and responding well to treatment,” Dr Martin said.

Meanwhile, the government has pledged to cover all medical expenses for survivors and provide condolence support to bereaved families. Each family that lost a relative in the crash will receive Sh500,000 and coffins provided by the government.

Mbeya Regional Commissioner Dr Juma Homera announced the measures during a visit to the crash site and to those receiving treatment, where he conveyed his sympathy and monitored relief efforts.

“President Samia Suluhu Hassan has directed Tanroads to urgently construct a bypass road to divert heavy vehicles from this section, which will be reserved for light traffic only,” Dr Homera said.

“To the bereaved families, I extend my deepest condolences. The government stands with you in this difficult time,” he added.
