Dar es Salaam. The Tanzania Premier League Board (TPLB) has been hit by a major leadership shake-up following the resignation of its chairman, Steven Mnguto, and the suspension of its Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Almas Kasongo.

In an official statement released by the Tanzania Football Federation (TFF) and signed by its General Secretary, Kidao Wilfred, it was confirmed that Mnguto has submitted a formal resignation letter, stepping down from his post as TPLB chairman.

The announcement, made on June 13, 2025 comes at a time of heightened tension in Tanzanian football, particularly concerning fixture rescheduling controversies and mounting criticism over the board's operations.

Although no specific reasons were given for Mnguto’s resignation, football insiders believe recent turmoil within the board may have contributed to his decision.

His tenure saw several contentious moments, especially in dealing with high-profile league clashes and coordination challenges among top-tier clubs.

Mnguto, a key figure in overseeing the Premier League's management, exits amid growing scrutiny over the TPLB’s effectiveness.

In a related development, TFF President Wallace Karia has suspended TPLB CEO Almas Kasongo.

While the official statement did not provide reasons for Kasongo’s suspension, sources suggest that it may be linked to dissatisfaction with how the TPLB has handled critical matters in recent weeks.

These include ongoing disputes with major clubs and administrative delays that have sparked public outcry.

The dual exit of Mnguto and Kasongo points to a deeper restructuring initiative by the TFF, possibly aimed at restoring order and strengthening governance in league operations.

As the dust settles, attention now turns to the TFF’s next moves—whether interim appointments will be made, and how these changes will impact the future of the Mainland Premier League. Fans, clubs, and officials alike are calling for swift reforms to ensure the smooth running of Tanzania’s most beloved sport.
