Mourners to pay last respects to nine road accident in Ifakara

Already bodies have been taken to the CAN Tangani grounds for the farewell ceremony to be attended by government leaders, among others.

Leaders who have already arrived at the grounds include deputy minister for Lands, Housing and Human Settlement Development, Ms Angelina Mabula, the ministry’s permanent secretary Dorothy Mwanyika and the Morogoro regional commissioner, Dr Steven Kebwe.

The accident occurred when the government vehicle plunged into Kikowila River in Kilombero District at around 5.30pm as the occupants were returning from a land surveying assignment, according to Kilombero District commissioner James Ihunyo.

Nine people died and four others were injured and taken to St Francis Hospital in Kilombero for treatment.

Mr Ihunyo named the victims as two brothers Silvester and Rubaya Mwakalibela. Other victims were Salome Lukusi, Glory Mziray, Shaban Yusuf, Maria Buyenja, Msafiri Gerald, Hassan Kayuga and Sheila Shaban. The survivors are Faraja Gowele, Sauda Shabani, Stanislaus Budodi and car driver Baraka Charles, who was currently being questioned by the police.

The chief medic at St Francis Hospital, Dr Anthony Magoda, told The Citizen yesterday that the survivors were responding well to treatment and would be discharged soon.

The survivors told The Citizen that the accident was a result of speeding.

The ministers for Home Affairs Kangi Lugola and his Lands, Housing and Human Settlement Development counterpart William Lukuvi conveyed their condolences to families and relatives of the deceased and wished the survivors a quick recovery.
