Dar es Salaam. The Tanzania Electric Supply Company (Tanesco) has assured its customers that the demolition of its ten-storey building will not affect its operations.

Tanesco’s statement has come following public fears of power outage after President John Magufuli’s latest order that the building, which serves as the power utility’s headquarters, should be pulled down.

President Magufuli issued the directive during his tour at the state-owned electric company, which is within the road reserve where the envisaged Ubungo Interchange would be constructed. It was shortly after arriving from Chato District, Geita.

The Head of State directed the Tanzania National Roads Agency (Tanrods) to mark the building with X so it can be demolished to pave the way for the contractor of the Sh188 billion project (the Ubungo Interchange) to officially start working.

“Our services will be not be disrupted by the demolition of the building,” the statement released yesterday by Tanesco said, adding that it is a responsibility of each Tanzanian to support the President’s efforts in bringing about development in the country.

Soon after the President issued the directive to the Tanrods, the utility’s body’s communications manager, Ms Leila Muhaji said the order would be implemented.

“It’s a directive from the President and therefore, we are looking forward to implementing it,” she told The Citizen during an interview.

The statement by Tanesco urged its customers to realise that the President’s directive was in goodwill in an effort to improve the lives of his citizens.

It pointed out that as a state-owned firm they’ve received the directive and they will start working on it as soon as possible.
